This region receives some of the highest rainfall levels in South Africa, predominantly during the winter months, thanks to moist sea breezes from the Indian Ocean. Knysna’s etymology is derived from a Khoi word, though its precise meaning remains somewhat unclear. It could mean ‘place of wood’, ‘fern leaves’, or most likely ‘straight down’, which likely refers to the dramatic Knysna Heads. These prominent geological features are among the most striking along the southern African coastline, forming a challenging but scenic channel that connects the ocean to the beautiful lagoon at the Knysna River’s mouth.
The modern history of Knysna begins in 1804 with the arrival of George Rex, reputed to be the illegitimate son of King George III. He acquired the Melkhoutkraal estate on the lagoon’s edge and relocated there with his family and a large retinue, setting the foundation for the future community.
Currently, Knysna is one of the most well-known vacation spots on the Southern Cape coast, positioned between dense forests and the serene lagoon. The area is rich in various recreational and tourist attractions. The renowned Knysna Heads, two towering cliffs of sandstone, stand as the lagoon’s guardians to the sea. An observation point on the Eastern Head offers breathtaking views of the lagoon, Leisure Isle, and Knysna itself, while the Western Head comprises part of the private Featherbed Nature Reserve. The lagoon is notable for supporting one of the few oyster hatcheries globally, with Knysna oysters famed for their exceptional flavor.
At the Millwood House Museum located on Queen Street, visitors can explore displays that chronicle Knysna’s past, including personal belongings of George Rex. Originally constructed out of yellowwood during the last century’s gold rush and subsequently relocated to its current site in Knysna, the building itself is a historical artifact.
Additionally, the surrounding area of Knysna is enveloped by the magnificent Knysna Forest, South Africa’s largest indigenous forest. This dense forest canopy hosts a variety of tall, ancient trees of both native and exotic species, including stinkwood and ironwood, as well as an understory rich with ferns and wildflowers. The forest, once home to the vast herds of Knysna Elephants, now offers a sanctuary to a diverse array of bird species and small antelope, though it is rumored that only one elephant may still roam these woods, adding a layer of intrigue to this lush landscape.
